All proposals to conduct clinical trials in Australia require ethical review and approval by a human research ethics committee. The clinical trial investigator is responsible for ensuring that the trial is conducted according to the agreed protocol, in accordance with health authority requirements and with regard to the guiding principle of protecting the rights, safety, and welfare of subjects under the investigator’s care in the trial. A patient's eligibility and suitability to participate in a clinical trial are matters which must be assessed by a clinical trial investigator on a case by case basis.

Diversity in our clinical trial research

Different people may have different reactions to the same treatment, based on their age, gender, weight, race, ethnicity, and other factors. Clinical trials rely on volunteers to take part, and it’s vital that these volunteers come from diverse backgrounds. By including people from diverse backgrounds, clinical trials can show if the treatments are safe and work well for people from all different communities.
